TLJ-Ebert Movie Mania!
Welcome to the TLJ-Ebert Movie Mania recommendation List.
This is a compilation of every mini-review I've posted on my blog.
Enjoy!
August Rush
TLJ: 2 stars
Ebert: 3 stars
Only that Jonathan Rhys Meyers is the Irish Joaquin Phoenix sans lip scar was this movie worth watching.
Margot at the Wedding
TLJ and Ebert: 3 stars
Outstanding. Excellent performances and writing. Jack Black is hilarious.
Dan in Real Life
TLJ and Ebert: 3 stars
Predictable, but Carell is too cool. Love the dancing.
Lars and the Real Girl
TLJ and Ebert: 3.5 stars
Ryan Gosling keeps making up for appearing in that awful Notebook movie with awesome indie performances. A heart-wrenching, relatable, human story. I loved this film.
3:10 to Yuma
TLJ: 4 stars
Ebert: 4 stars
Great time at the movies. Good story, fabulous acting, ending the way it should be (not all happy for happy's sake). See this film!
Blades of Glory
TLJ recommendation: 2 stars
Ebert: no review
A stupid waste of 90 minutes, exactly what I was looking for. And Jon Heder rules!
A Good Year
TLJ recommendation: 3.25 stars
Ebert: no review online
Russell Crowe is easy to watch. Albert Finney is amazing, always one of my faves. The movie was light, funny, silly, sentimental. I really enjoyed it.
An Inconvenient Truth
TLJ: 2.5 stars.
Ebert: 4 stars. ??
Left some unanswered questions (uh, did Al's son die or not?), but a pretty good watch. That funny man is the Al Gore I voted for. Where the heck was he during the election?
Thank You for Smoking
TLJ and Ebert: 3.5 stars.
I loved this movie. It was funny and sarcastic and smart. Even Katie Holmes, er, Kate Cruise, couldn't ruin it for me.
Hollywoodland
Ebert: no recommendation
TLJ: ??
I have to see it again. The people with the plastic bag, who rooted for fruit, food and soda cans every 5 seconds -- for more than 30 minutes before I complained to the manager -- kind of ruined it for me.
Flight 93
Ebert: no review online.
TLJ: 3 stars.
Unlike "World Trade Center," this film lets the drama of that day tell the story. Fantastic job. Compelling. Sad. Real.
World Trade Center
Ebert: 2.5 stars.
TLJ: 2 stars.
The scenes with the officers buried underground were the best of the film. The part with the Marine -- over the top and made me hate the movie. And Maria Bello = highly overrated in my humble opinion. Also, the title -- the worst in history. Didn't really tell what the movie was about.
Clerks II
Ebert: None on his site.
TLJ: 1.5 stars.
I love Randal and Dante. I loved Randal's impression of "The Lord of the Rings." The rest of the movie was AWFUL. Kevin Smith, I have always supported and loved your work. Why did you do this to me?
Failure to Launch
Ebert and TLJ: 1 star.
Is it so impossible to make a romantic comedy that isn't completely stupid?
Fun with Dick and Jane
Ebert: 2.5 stars.
TLJ: 2 stars.
You're being generous, Rog.
Proof
Ebert and TLJ: 4 stars.
Mr. Ebert wrote: "Proof" locates itself in the mind of the madman's daughter, who loves him and sorrows for him, who has lived in his shadow so long she fears the light and the things that go with it. Brilliant.
Derailed
Ebert and TLJ: 2.5 stars.
Can someone explain the mass appeal of Jennifer Aniston to me? I don't get it. This movie was too predictable, down to the gut-wrenching last scene.
"The Squid and the Whale"
Ebert: 3.5 stars.
TLJ: 4 stars.
Loved it.
"The Constant Gardener"
Ebert: 4 stars.
TLJ: 4 stars.
Intriguing. Interesting. Well-acted.
"Brokeback Mountain"
Ebert: 4 stars.
TLJ: 3 stars.
The hype killed it a bit for me, but it was good.
